Augmented reality is one of the most exiting emerging technologies. It is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial view, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.
Picture yourself in situations like designing a new product or just walking across the shop floor. With augmented-reality displays, which will eventually look much like a normal pair of glasses, you can see informative graphics in your field of view, design and present new products before they are even manufactured, or train people while emulating different situations. These enhancements to reality will be refreshed continually to reflect all your movements and actions.
Entering the area of augmented reality was a natural step for IPS after our work with visualization and 3D modeling for several years. Holographic extensions to our solutions have opened amazing new opportunities. Now it is possible to “see” the product right in front of you, “touch” it and “manipulate” it with your gestures. You can “select” the right product, immediately get all relevant information while working with it, and “decompose” it and “explore” its individual parts.
Augmented reality is not only available through specialized holographic hardware like Microsoft’s HoloLens, but also reachable while using smartphones and tables.
