Client Overview
Grace Health is a digital platform that focuses on improving women’s health in areas with limited resources, particularly in East and West Africa. Its mission is to provide affordable, accessible, personalised health guidance through mobile-first digital solutions, especially for women who do not have consistent access to conventional healthcare. This approach enables Grace Health to reach millions of women and provide them with vital health education and services, especially in markets where traditional healthcare infrastructure is limited. As Grace Health’s user base grows and its ambitions become more global, the company needs a scalable, multilingual platform that can function reliably in regions with limited internet connectivity.
The Challenge
Design and deliver a digital health solution that works for underserved populations in environments with poor connectivity, as well as for users with low health literacy. The app must be user-friendly, intuitive and support offline usage, while ensuring the privacy of sensitive health data. The backend also needed to support complex chatbot logic and multilingual flows across multiple regions and regulatory environments.
The Solution
Grace Health partnered with us to develop a mobile-first platform tailored to the realities of emerging markets. The front end was designed to support multiple languages and function seamlessly, even with intermittent or no internet access. Meanwhile, a sophisticated backend was developed to handle chatbot-driven triage, multilingual content and asynchronous data syncing. Analytics and messaging tools were integrated into the system to enable personalised user experiences and ongoing optimisation.
Results & Impact
The Grace Health app delivers real-world impact in areas were healthcare is heavily inaccessible, currently serving 1.3 million women across Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa:
✅ Optimised for low-resource environments:
This mobile app is designed to run efficiently on low-end devices, ensuring it is accessible to users with limited hardware capabilities. Its optimised performance provides a smooth user experience without compromising functionality.
✅ AI chatbot for health insights:
The app features a built-in AI chatbot that continuously monitors and tracks health metrics. It provides personalised insights to help users stay on top of their well-being in an intuitive and interactive way.
✅ Medically approved digital tool:
This app has been developed to make a tangible difference to women’s daily health. It provides reliable health tracking and guidance, empowering women to take control of their health and make informed decisions.
✅ Scalable and modular architecture:
Designed for extensibility, the platform can support new languages, regions and content flows without the need for major re-engineering, paving the way for broader expansion.
Why It Worked
The key to success was designing with real user constraints in mind, prioritising low-bandwidth performance, scalable engineering and an empathetic user experience (UX). Unlike any other solution available, the Grace app is specifically built for emerging markets and the next billion users. Its lean design is an innovation in itself, opening up the market to women, who tend to be in environments with low bandwidth — the reality for most people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Close collaboration with Grace Health enabled agile iteration and ensured the solution remained aligned with the needs of end users across diverse markets.
